sometimes, when I'm not sure what my next project is going to be, I put aside my usual habit of careful planning and construction and just make the first thing that comes to mind. Sometimes the result isn't very interesting or exciting, but other times the exercise sparks some new idea and plants the seed for a future project. A few weeks ago I took the first three designs that came to mind, sketched them out in a couple minutes and then set to creating them. Here are the results:
The second of these studies is my favorite in terms of visuals, but the third study gave me the most promising ideas. The third piece was a study in balance and while in this case I had to cut small notches in the upper piece in order to get it to balance on the lower base, I realized that if I hung some sort of weight from the two lowest points of the inverted U, it would have a lower center of gravity and would balance all by itself. With enough weight, perhaps the top section could even swing back and forth without falling off the base. So what could this design be used for? Maybe a modern take on old fashioned kitchen scales? How about some sort of swing two people could actually sit in? Stay tuned.
