After finishing my most recent coffee table design, I got a lot of positive feedback with a bunch of people showing interest in buying a table. This got me thinking. I love designing and handcrafting individual pieces, but what if I were able to streamline the process for one piece in particular? Doing so would allow me to produce multiples of one design and really get it out into the world. Also, if I were able to perfect the process so that I could produce a certain design much more quickly than usual, it would mean I could increase access to my work by selling it for less than the one-time designs.
This is what I have been working on. Over the past month, I have perfected the design and production of my Tense Coffee Table and will soon be launching a Kickstarter campaign in an effort to get it into as many hands as possible. For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it is a fundraising site where individuals give pledges in return for some sort of reward or product. Every campaign is all or nothing; the person doing the fundraising only gets the money and the backers only get the reward if the fundraising goals are met. I’ll write another post in a few days with more details about the table and the campaign, but for now I just wanted to share one of my rewards. In a Kickstarter campaign, the person doing the fundraising will typically have different tiers of incentives. The bigger a donation, the better the incentive/reward. Along with perfecting my coffee table design over the past month, I have been thinking up and creating different incentives. One of the lower level incentives is this small sculpture:
As with much of my work, the sculpture makes use of steel cables under tension to create beautiful contours as well as a stable system. The S-curve that is the main element of the piece is simply a scaled-down version of the S-curve used to create the Tense Coffee table. In fact, just about all of the incentives I have come up with use this S-curve design in some way. Though I used plywood to create this prototype sculpture, the final versions sent out to backers will be cut from bamboo. I’ll post on the next-tier reward tomorrow!
